The Band Members continued...

Christy

The only female member of the band, Christy Yeoh Sing Yuin or Christy for short is a student of the arts, having been part of a marching band since her school days, where she picked up the snare and side drums. Currently, she is completing her degree in music at a local university. Her major is the Piano and her minor is the Tenor saxophone.

Needless to say, she has thoroughly mastered playing these instruments and has composed and performed her own music at countless classical recitals. Feeling the need to further expand her musical horizons, she started picking up the Djembe at a local drum circle.

Christy is a percussionist at heart and is currently learning to play the dhol from a member of the Diplomats. She plays the keyboards, saxophone, snare and side drums with the band.

Ahmad Zaini Bin Mohd Mokhtar is the latest addition to the band. Gieeka as he is fondly known, is a traditional musician of a different kind. While he plays most of the traditional Malay and Arabic instruments, he plays it with a more contemporary and modern feel to it, giving the Diplomats a brilliant, new dimension to their rhythm. He is a full time musician, having led many traditional Malay ensembles and is also a teacher of these instruments.

He is the musical director of the highly acclaimed Dendang Anak group, of which he is also a founder. Gieeka plays the Rebana, Kompang Jidur, Gedang Melayu and a host of other traditional Malay percussions for the band.

Sethi

Satwindarjit Singh or Sethi as he prefers, has made a name for himself playing the Dhol drum. He is lauded for his slick dance moves, sexy smile and massive beats while on stage. Sethi has performed on many stages and clubs alongside a number local Bhangra DJ’s and is known as Mr. Bhangra of the band. Another member of the Malaysian Sikh Band, Sethi is a classy Tenor and Base drummer.

He has also built a solid reputation for his out-of-this-world vocal abilities. He is very much a vocalist rather than a singer, using his talent almost like an instrument. Sethi is also a self trained Tabla and Dholak player.

Sethi is the main Dhol Drummer of the Diplomats, doubles up as one of the lead vocalists, and plays the Dholak, Tabla and light percussions with the band.

Sanggat is another one who is new to the band. An acclaimed master tabla player, he is known to be the best exponent of tabla in the region. He is classically trained in the art of Northern Indian rhythm and melody. Sanggat has written, arranged, performed and recorded with a host of local and foreign artists.

As with most skilled tabla players, Sanggat naturally progressed to playing the Dhol, of which has also developed a reputation of being a master drummer. Sanggat plays the tabla, dhol, and traditional Northern Indian percussion with the Diplomats.
